Mortaseal completed its perfect run through the elimination round of the Cebu Architects Basketball Club 1st Mortabond Cup with a 76-71 win over EZ Bond on Sept. 15, 2024 at the Benedicto College gym.
EZ Bond looked to be in control early on, with Abet Ceniza leading the charge. By halftime, EZ Bond had gained momentum, holding a narrow 40-35 lead. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the fourth quarter.
Mortaseal, trailing for most of the game, mounted an impressive comeback in the second half. Lemuel Aspeño put on a dominant performance, leading Mortaseal with 25 points. Chester Hinagdanan added 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Mortaseal’s defense tightened in the final quarter, forcing turnovers and limiting EZ Bond’s offensive opportunities. Despite a late push from EZ Bond, Mortaseal held firm in the dying minutes, outscoring their opponents in the final period to complete the comeback and secure the 76-71 victory.
In other games, Strakgrout triumphed over Mortaflow with a 63-55 victory in a game filled with momentum swings. Jay Devenadera had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Kim Marilao tallied 16 points and 12 boards.
Brute also delivered a commanding performance in the final game, defeating Lite 61-49. Miguel Cenabre had 17 points and five rebounds for Brute, while Carlos Baltar had 14 points and nine boards. Jorence Zamora added 12 markers.
Mortaseal and Strakgrout will move on to the semifinals where they will wait for the winners of the quarterfinal matches this weekend. (Contributed by Jonas N. Panerio)
