Filipinas shoot for historic first Seag gold medal in women’s football vs. Vietnam

The Philippines and Vietnam are headed for one last dance, this time for all the glory in the women’s football final of the Southeast Asian Games.

Game time is 8:30 p.m. PHL time.

GAME FACE. Filipinas head coach Mark Torcaso with his Vietnamese counterpart during the pre-match press conference.

Already assured of its best finish in the meet, the Filipinas will shoot for its first gold medal against the team it already beat in the group stage.

“We are extremely proud to be in the final match for the very first time, we are going to show our absolute all to show the country, and to show the world that we are here to play (for the gold),” said Filipinas head coach Mark Torcaso.

The Filipinas started the Seag campaign on the wrong foot, losing to Myanmar but have been on an upward trajectory ever since, beating Vietnam with a late goal and drubbing Malasia, 6-0, to make the semis.

In the semifinal, they beat Thailand via penalty shootout, a repeat victory over the same side during the 2022 AFF Women’s Championships.

“They’ve lost that first game but they never stopped fighting. They are extremely passionate about playing for the country, we saw that again today, like the game against Vietnam we won that late,” said Torcaso.
