THE Philippines scored a historic first after outlasting Vietnam on penalty shootout for its maiden gold medal in women’s football in the Southeast Asian Games.

The match, dominated mostly by the Vietnamese, ended in a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, thanks to a friendly call by the referee.
Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy headed in a fine cross but she was called for offside even if she was clearly onside.
The Philippines had a better showing in the second half but couldn’t find that go ahead goal.
During the shootout, both teams were still as all five kickers converted their spot kicks before Olivia McDaniel sealed the win after stopping Tran Thi Thu’s soft penalty, sparking a wild celebration from the team.
