EGAY Alqueza survived Jomar Jumapao’s A game to pocket the October title of the Sugbuanon Bowlers United Bowler of the Month tournament at the SM Bowling Center on Oct. 27, 2024.
Alqueza, who also won the July edition of the tournament, topped the elimination round with 1,112, after scoring 230, 217, 181, 207 and 202 in five rounds. Nestor Ranido was a close second at 1,107, scoring a high of 232 in Round 3, while Jumapao got third place at 1,094 after a tournament best of 280 in the final round. Chris Ramil got fourth place with 1,039, while Lemuel Paquibut got third place with 1,003.
The rest of the top 10 bowlers are Luke Bolongan (995), Richard Turner (993), Heber Alqueza (981), Arthur Tapaya (971), and David Pena (966).
In the first knockout game, Paquibut defeated Ramil, 185-167 but lost to Jumapao in the next round, 238-182.
Jumapao went on to final round after beating Ranid, 232-161, but in the final, lady luck smiled on Alqueza as he won by the narrowest of margins, 209-208.
“I was expecting high-scoring games as this is the same pattern in the SUGBU OPEN. And true indeed, scores were high with Jomar scoring an almost perfect game in the fifth- with a score of 280 that catapulted him to 3rd place. But I did not expect to win,” he said. “When I was the consistent top seed since game 1, I said it will be difficult to win against Jomar Jumapao – a multi-awarded ex-RP team member. I won by a hairline – 1 pin…and it was pure luck.”
