Ballerhood, a selection of some of Cebu’s top junior talents, showed its class as it picked up two easy wins in the second week of the Cebu Youth Basketball League Summer Showcase at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club basketball court.
Zyle Cabellon and Santos Go led Ballerhood’s balanced offense in its 50-point win over GAA, 114-64. Jonathan Manialili had 16, NJ Atunay scored 14, Daniel Padilla scored 12 and Jerwin Espina had 10.
Next to fall against the might of Ballerhood was Punta Alas,102-43, with Kline Ochavo leading the charge with 22 points–12 from downton–six rebounds and an impressive six steals. The lone bright spot for Punta Alas was Cyrille Bacalso, who punctuated his 18 points with an impressive 18 rebounds.
With a perfect 2-0 start, Ballerhood will now take on Kayud Tayud, also undefeated in two games, for the no. 1 spot in Group A on April 8, 2022.
Kayud Tayud got its first win, 73-63, over Punta Alas, thanks to lanky wingman Roy Ivan Penas, who delivered 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Kerk Loui Navarro led Punta Alas’ losing effort with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Kayud Tayud had a much easier time in its second game, routing GAA, 94-62, with Jerome Luchavez registering a double double in just 15 minutes. Luchavez had 17 points and 13 rebounds, while Ray Catacutan had 22 points for GAA.
The CYBL Summer Showcase is the first time the tournament returns after the pandemic put a halt in the local basketball scene. The Under 19 event for players born in 2003 gives the players a chance to showcase their skills since the local collegiate league had to postpone its basketball event due to the pandemic.
Started by the late Cebuano sportsman and journalist Rico Navarro, it is now continued by his son Popoy.
