After a referee-stopped-contest in the round-of-16, medal hopeful Eumir Marcial will take on fellow pro Arman Darchinyan in the quarterfinal round of the men’s middleweight division at 1:36 p.m. on Aug. 1. Marcial, the top seed in the division, will gun for a win to assure himself of a bronze and standing in his way is a fellow pro in Darchinyan, the nephew of Vic Darchinyan.
Both are 1-0 in their pro careers, but in their amateur ranks, Marcial has the edge with a 69-18 record with 16 KOs. And one of those wins was against Darchinyan on May 20, 2018 during the finals of the Konstantin Korotkov Memorial International Boxing tournament.
Despite having that advantage, Marcial knows it doesn’t count in Tokyo.
“I beat him in 2018 in Russia, but the Olympics are another story. Everyone here prepared hard for their matches,” he said.
