Barbosa rules 2nd Sugbu Open Championships Mixed Masters, earns P80,000

ANDREY Barbosa beat Luis Barredo twice in the step-ladder finals to win the Mixed Masters title of the 2nd SUGBU Open Championships at the SM Seaside Bowling Center on July 6, 2025.

In the elimination round, Barbosa finished second at 2,179 after a strong showing in the final three rounds with 234, 248, and 244.

Barredo was a comfortable first placer with 2,285, scoring a high of 279 in round 3 and only failing to breach 200 twice.

Maeng Viloria of the host Sugbuan BOwlers United was at third place with 2,121, while teammates Mark Hodgkinson (2,100) and Jomar Jumapao (2,091) got the fourth and fifth spots.

In the first match of the step ladder finals, Barbosa proved too strong for Viloria, 237-171, and arranged a finals showdown with Barredo.

Barbosa defeated Barbedo, who enjoyed a twice to beat edge, 228-214, and 214-207, to pocket the P80,000 champion’s purse, while Barredo settled for P40,000.

Viloria got P20,000, while Hodgkinson and Jumapao earned P10,000, and P5,000, respectively.

“It was a very exciting finals as ace bowlers from Cebu, Bacolod, and Luzon fought it out and are representing Bowler X except for Maeng Viloria,” said Edgar Alqueza of the host club.

Meanwhile, in the Mixed Classified final held a day before Wilber Dolosa showed nerves of steel as he won the title over a game Lyle Rosales.

Dolosa earned the top seeding with 1,807, while Rosales got the second spot with 1,754. Jefferson Tan got third place with 1,673, while host bowlers Egay Alqueza and Mel Fines got the fourth and fifth spots with 1,649 and 1,648.

In the step-ladder final, Rosales ousted Tan, 200-181, and won the first match against Dolosa, 218-146. However, in the deciding match, Dolosa had no equal as he won, 241-218.

“Wilbert showed nerves of steel as he struck out the last two frames of the deciding game to win the championship,” said Alqueza.
