Buyco ends dry spell, wins Sugbu Sunday shootout

GJ Buyco showed up with his golden arm to win the weekly Sunday Shootout of the Sugbuanon Bowlers United on March 16, 2025 at the SM Seaside Cebu.

After scoring 175 in the first round, good for just joint fourth place, Buyco, who represented the country in the World Youth and Asian Schools championships, got his stride going and dropped 234, 225, and 242 in the three games to finish with 876 in Class A for first place, ahead of Richard Turner (857) and Arthur Tapaya (770.)

Turner had the best showing in the first round with 236, but had 191, 205, and 201 in the next three rounds.

In Class B, the returning Mel Fines banked on his strong showing in Game 2 to top the division with 833, beating Vivian Padawan and Celios Viloria.

Fines, a civil engineer who returned to the SUGBU competitions after a long layoff, opened with a 183 but had an impressive 238 in round 2 for his first place finish.

In Division C, Tessie Dante banked on her 194 in the third round to top the elims with 764, beating Flor Hodgkinson and Dory Enoveso.

In the shootout event, Buyco broke his dry spell with 212, beating Dante by just three pins, while Fines settled for third with 157.
