A MUCH improved Philippine side seemed headed to a draw with the group favorites but Waris Chooltong changed the script with a late header for Thailand’s 1-0 win over the host in the ASEAN Hyundai Cup 2026.
Thailand is now assured of a spot in the semifinals with a game to spare, while the Philippines is left with three points and a must-win situation against Malaysia.
“It’s sad that the guys didn’t get the reward of a least one point,” said Philippines coach Carles Cuadrat, who started veteran Patrick Deyto over Quincy Kammeraad at goal.
Deyto showed the change was well worth it, making five saves for the night as the Philippines frustrated Thailand for most of the match and had moments of brilliance on the other end.
However, in the 84th minute, Picha Autra found an open Waris Chooltong who headed in the lone goal of the match.
At three points with only a match left, the Philippines no longer controls its fate in the tournament.
“This tournament continues to give us the opportunity to test new players and prepare them for future competitions, with many of these players set to represent us at the Asian Games, where experiences like this will help them grow. Overall, I’m happy with the team’s understanding what the game demands. Now it’s more difficult, but we’ll keep fighting until the end for our chance to qualify,” said Cuadrat.
