The Don Bosco Technological Center completed its sweep of the first round, staying on course to win the title outright, while the University of San Jose-Recoletos jumped to first place in the college division during Sunday’s Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football event at the Cebu City Sports Center.
USJ-R, which holds the record for most titles in the college division at nine, blanked the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 2-0, thanks to the first half goals of Jan Michael Oliveros (18th) and Kirk Alabate (42nd). Striker Marco Angelo Ouano, who created the scoring opportunities, was named man-of-the-match as USJ-R leapfrogged over the University of San Carlos (USC) for the top spot with seven points. Aside from holding the most titles, USJ-R is the only team in the league to have won a four-peat (2001-2004), a three-peat (2007-2009, and a double (2012-2013).
On the other hand, defending champion USC, which is seeking a five-peat and its eighth overall title (not nine as previously written) again suffered a second half meltdown. Areli Gaspi gave USC the lead in the 28th but the defending champions settled for a draw after 76th minute equalizer by Daven Taneo. It was the second straight game that USC failed to hold on to its lead as it also drew USJ-R last week after taking a 1-0 lead.
