The Don Bosco Technological Center completed its sweep of the first round, staying on course to win the title outright, while the University of San Jose-Recoletos jumped to first place in the college division during Sunday’s Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football event at the Cebu City Sports Center.
USJ-R, which holds the record for most titles in the college division at nine, blanked the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 2-0, thanks to the first half goals of Jan Michael Oliveros (18th) and Kirk Alabate (42nd). Striker Marco Angelo Ouano, who created the scoring opportunities, was named man-of-the-match as USJ-R leapfrogged over the University of San Carlos (USC) for the top spot with seven points. Aside from holding the most titles, USJ-R is the only team in the league to have won a four-peat (2001-2004), a three-peat (2007-2009, and a double (2012-2013).
On the other hand, defending champion USC, which is seeking a five-peat and its eighth overall title (not nine as previously written) again suffered a second half meltdown. Areli Gaspi gave USC the lead in the 28th but the defending champions settled for a draw after 76th minute equalizer by Daven Taneo. It was the second straight game that USC failed to hold on to its lead as it also drew USJ-R last week after taking a 1-0 lead.
USC is at five points on a win and two draws, while UC, which lost its first two games, finally earned a point.
On Saturday, potential finalists USJ-R and USC will meet again in the second round, while USPF will gun for a repeat win over UC.
In the high school division, DBTC picked its third straight win in the first round, 2-0, against rival Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu with C. Pumareja and R. Daanoy scoring in the 36th and 48th minutes respectively. A sweep of the last three games will earn DBTC the title, with the second and third placers to be determined by the team standings. Ateneo is second at four points, while USJ-R is third with three after a 1-0 win over USC thanks to a 50th-minute goal by V. Fernandez. (Coaches, please write the full name of your players).
On Saturday, DBTC will face USJ-R, while Ateneo faces USC. DBTC blanked USJ-R, 3-0, in the first round, while Ateneo and USC fought to a scoreless draw.
