USPF grabs lead in Cesafi football after draw with 8-time champion USC

THE University of Southern Philippines Foundation got its measure of revenge against eight-time defending champion University of San Carlos to take the lead in the collegiate division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. 2025 season.

NOT THIS TIME. USPF, which conceded a late penalty in their first encounter, got the top spot after holding USC to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the Cesafi collegiate football competition.

USPF, which conceded a late penalty in its opening day loss to the USC Warriors, conceded a sixth minute goal to John Cyril Sinoy but got the equalizer in the 64th minute courtesy of John Rey Sarino to earn a point.

USPF, which had Karl Matthe Berdon earning Best Player of the Game honors, improved to seven points to supplant USC from the top spot on two wins, a draw and a loss.

On the other hand, USC, which hasn’t won a match since its opening day win, dropped to second on six points on a one win, three draws record.

Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines Cebu climbed to third place after outlasting the University of San Jose-Recoletos, 1-0, on a Jaybe Abasolo goal in the 20th.

Johansen Amistoso earned Best Player of the Game honors for UPC, which improved to four points, while USJ-R stayed at the last spot on a single point.

In the high school division, Yuki John Ceniza earned best player of the game honors after scoring in the 50th minute to lift Don Bosco Technical College, 1-0, over rival Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, while Louie Vincent Fernandez scored the lone goal for USJ-R in their 1-0 win over San Carlos School Cebu, 1-0. It was USJ-R’s first win after three draws.

DBTC is still on top with seven points on two wins and a draw, while USJ-R jumped to second on six points.
